About this symbol

It shows how many yen one U.S. dollar buys (JPY per USD). The Federal Reserve is the central bank of the United States. The Bank of Japan is the sole bank of issue for banknotes in Japan.

Coins come in six denominations: ¥500, ¥100, ¥50, ¥10, ¥5 and ¥1. Banknotes are produced by the National Printing Bureau, and the Bank of Japan pays the production cost and takes delivery of them. The power to manufacture and issue coins belongs to the government. The Japan Mint carries out the manufacturing work. Sources: trade[XYZ] (contract issuer), Federal Reserve Board, Bank of Japan, trade[XYZ] (contract issuer), SIX (Secretariat of the ISO 4217 Maintenance Agency), Digital Agency (e-Gov Law Search), trade[XYZ].

Article 8 sets capital at 100,000,000 yen and requires the government's contribution to be at least 55,000,000 yen. Coins bearing the Reiwa 7 year mark totalled 614,998 thousand, excluding commemorative coins. All of the above is from e-Gov Law Search and the Japan Mint.

USD/JPY shows how many yen equal one U.S. dollar. EUR/USD and GBP/USD show how many U.S. dollars equal one euro and one pound, respectively.

Is it the same as a bank or currency-exchange rate?

No. It references executable quotes from institutional liquidity providers. It is not a customer rate that includes fees.

The external price runs from Sunday at 17:00 ET through Friday at 17:00 ET. Outside that period, it switches to an internal price.

Who issues the currencies?

They are issued by the central banks of the two respective currencies. “About this symbol” states the issuers and the types of banknotes.
