About this symbol
It references the USD price of one barrel of Brent crude oil.
The ICE Brent Index uses only transactions and assessments for full 700,000-barrel cargoes. That index is the average of 5 samples over a 1-day period, taken at 10:30, 12:30, 14:30, 16:30 and 19:30. In 2022, 98 countries produced about 80.75 million barrels of crude oil per day, with the United States at 14.7%, Saudi Arabia 13.2%, Russia 12.7%, Canada 5.6% and Iraq 5.5%. A designated futures contract is what the external price follows, moving to the next contract month in 20% increments between the 5th and the 10th business day of each month. Its contract month sits one month further out than WTI, starting with H in January. The external pricing week opens Sunday 18:00 ET and closes Friday 18:00 ET, one hour later than the other commodities. Maintenance falls between 17:00 and 18:00 ET from Monday to Thursday. Holidays follow the futures schedule, and the issuer publishes the list separately. Sources: trade[XYZ] (contract issuer), the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), and ICE Futures Europe.
Delivery is through an exchange for physical, or EFP, with cash settlement against the ICE Brent Index also available. All of the above is from ICE Futures Europe.

Frequently asked questions
Is this a cash price?
Gold, silver, platinum, and palladium reference spot prices in cash markets. Because copper, crude oil, and natural gas have no cash spot market, they reference specified futures contracts.
What happens when the contract month changes for a symbol that references futures?
The reference shifts to the next contract month in 20% increments from the fifth through the tenth business day of each month. During the transition, the reference value is calculated by weighting the two contract months.
What are the units?
Gold, silver, platinum, and palladium use one troy ounce. Copper uses one pound, crude oil uses one barrel, and natural gas uses one MMBtu. All are denominated in USD.
What dates do the figures for uses and production refer to?
They are figures from publications by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). Each entry states either the publication date or the data year in its text.
